AACW Launches Fundraising Efforts for S.O.S. Children's Villages in Nepal

As soon as the 7.8 earthquake in Nepal was announced on April 25, 2015, the Board of Directors of the Austrian-American Council West decided unanimously and without hesitation to donate to the troubled area -- writing a substantial check for Nepal earthquake relief as an initial step toward support. August 7, 2015 – For the highly acclaimed Los Angeles-hosted Special Olympics that opened on July 25, the Austrian-American Council West (AACW) was ‘front and center’ in its support with its sponsorship of ten young athletes from Austria with intellectual disabilities.    It began in 2014 when AACW hosted a fund-raising gala that allowed local Austrians to be first of LA’s cultural affinity groups to join the cause that brought 6,500 athletes from across the globe to Los Angeles to compete in soccer, cycling, track and field, basketball, gymnastics, aquatics and other sports, in this 8-day celebration of sport.

"The Special Olympics gives hope and joy to young people from around the world," said Austrian-American Council West President Veronika Reinelt, adding "the excluded become the included in festivities that allow them to excel in sports and to forge new friendships."

The gala opening saw the AACW in the front row of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where Michelle Obama and Maria Shriver were among the keynote speakers.  The Council members draped a large Austrian flag over the edge of the wall, and waved a number of small red-white-red pennants.   All of the national teams entered the Coliseum through the center aisle, and when the Austrian athletes arrived and spotted the flags, they waved and took pictures of the unique support this Alpine team received.   And when they passed in review before the American Austrians, many hands were shaken, more photographs followed, and in a moving gesture of fondness between the athletes and the local Council, the team threw its white hats to the “locals” in friendship.

The Austrian team and earned many honors in the course of the games and the AACW expresses its pride and congratulations.

Los Angeles - Austrian actor Christoph Dostal’s documentary film I Dance Myself about the life of legendary dancer Bob Curtis received completion backing from the Austrian American Council West, providing a key boost to finishing the film in 2014.

The U.S.-born Bob Curtis lived the last 20 years of his life in Vienna, and his work as a dancer, choreographer and ultimately permanent tutor at the Vienna State Opera Ballet School helped build a diverse international dance scene in Austria. After his death in 2009, he was buried at the Zentralfriedhof in Simmering.

“The cultural relevance to both Austria and the US, symbolized by Bob Curtis’ life, was at the core of our decision to get behind Christoph and to make our first-ever donation to a film project” said AACW President Veronika Reinelt at the contract signing and proceeds conferment, attended by Dostal and Austrian Consul General Mag. Ulrike Ritzinger, AACW Executive Vice President Lilliana Popov-Alexander and Treasurer Fred R. Reinelt, and Attorney Dennis Fredricks who had negotiated the agreement.

Already enjoying the support of several Austrian and US film funds that enabled Dostal to complete production, the AACW’s contribution to the post-production budget assures that the bio-pic will be released.
Dostal, whose credits include a leading role in the long-running TV program Forbidden Love (Verbotene Liebe), in the feature film For God and Country, and a supporting role in Steven Spielberg's “Band of Brothers”, was gracious in thanking the AACW, saying “it means the world to me” that Austrians in the US have helped him to realize the project.

Consul General Ritzinger expressed her appreciation to Dostal for conceiving the project and to the AACW and to Fredricks for supporting an Austrian film artist in America with a film that builds bridges between the two countries.

“Key to the donation” explains Fredricks, “was that Christoph receives funding through a tax-exempt US non-profit organization, which is a prerequisite for the AACW to make any donation”.

The AACW was founded in 1988 with the mission of perpetuating Austrian-American friendship, and this statement of purpose has guided the respected US non-profit organization in giving its support to various charities as well to selected artists who have devoted their talents to directions that reflect positively on Austria and its relationship to America.

The gathering was sealed with a toast to a film premiere in the year ahead.

On Sunday, February 23, 2014 a playground was dedicated [link:] to SOS Children’s Villages - Florida, a non-profit whose mission is to build families for children in need and help them shape their own futures and share in the development of their communities. Indeed, the number of children in need of hope, healing, and homes with SOS Children’s Villages (SOS) continues to grow. SOS stands strong for 65 years to meet needs of children and families throughout the world.

Over the years Austrian-American Council West (AACW) has contributed substantial funds to SOS Children's Villages in Austria and the United States and is proud to be listed as a Gold Member in the SOS Chairman's Circle [link:]. The major contributor for establishing the SOS playground was the AACW with a donation of $10,000. AACW raised the funds for the playground donation at an Austrian-American Day Gala on September 17, 2011, which celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the founding of the Austrian-American Councils of North America. A permanent bronze plaque recognizing AACW’s generosity will be placed when the playground is finished.

2013 Austrian-American Day

The Austrian-American Council West has created an Annual Award. This award is composed of patron donations and the net proceeds from our events together with a gift from the Council itself. Every year, a nonprofit is carefully selected; the majority of these organizations are dedicated to helping children with special needs. We have contributed to many worthy organizations over the years.

The 2013 recipient of our annual award was The Auxiliary of the Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women and Children. The Auxiliary was created by a group of dedicated women with the goal of raising awareness of and providing financial support with dignity and love for homeless women and children. The mission of the Good Shepherd Center brings hundreds of broken families from the streets to independent family management.

Our Council decided this year to match the donations of our generous patrons and was very pleased to present a check for $ 12,000 to The Auxiliary of the Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women and Children.

Annual Member Meeting 2013 & Farewell to Austrian Consul General Dr. Karin Proidl

The Austrian-American Council West joins the many well-wishers in Los Angeles and across the Western United States in saying thank you and Auf Wiedersehen to our Consul General, now Ambassador to Argentina, Dr. Proidl. We appreciate the productive and enjoyable four years of her leadership and are proud to have been able to cooperate with the Consulate General as co-sponsors on a number of projects that furthered our core mission, perpetuating Austrian-American friendship.

In addition to the Council’s own events, the following programs were unique opportunities to co-sponsor and cooperate between the Austrian Consulate General and the Austrian-American Council West.

Two events took place at the Goethe Institut as joint undertakings between the Austrian Consulate General and sponsored by the Austrian-American Council West:

November 1 -- Mahler at The Piano: Lecture and Performance commemorating Gustav Mahler's 150th Birthday, featuring Marialena Fernandes, instructor of Chamber Music at the University for Music and the Arts in Vienna, and Ranko Markovic, Artistic Director of the Vienna Conservatory.

November 8 -- The feature film “Mahler On The Couch”, a passionate and witty film which portrayed the fascinating and doomed marriage of Gustav Mahler and his wife Alma.

September 9 -- The Council and the Austrian Consulate General were among the sponsors of the premiere of Arthur Schnitzler's “Being Jewish in Vienna”, a staged reading at the Getty Center and at USC, from the journals and correspondence of the renowned Austrian writer which commemorated the 150th anniversary of his birth.

November 11 -- The Council and the Austrian Consulate General demonstrated further teamwork through a program at the Villa Aurora in Pacific Palisades with selections by Zeisl, Meyerbeer, Schoenberg and others. The featured Austrian performers were the baritone Daniel Serafin and the pianist Jasna Popovic.

June 20 -- Another cooperation of the Consulate General and the Council with the Goethe Institut was a staged reading at the Goethe-Institute of the successful play “Der Mentor”. The dark comedy’s renowned Austrian playwright Daniel Kehlmann attended.

In addition, the Council is currently working out a cooperation with Austrian Prof. Harald Friedl at California State University Long Beach.

These four years were a very visible and joyous time for Austrian-American relations and we are grateful for the opportunity for the creative teamwork.  Buena suerte in Argentina Dr. Proidl, and please visit us again!

February 28, 2013 - On Thursday, February 28, at a festive donor’s day reception in the Los Angeles suburb of Duarte, California, Austrian-American Council West President Veronika Reinelt presented City of Hope Chair of the Department of PediatricsDr. Joseph Rosenthal with a donation check of $250,000 to support the 100 year old hospital’s highly acclaimed work in curing children’s cancer.
“City of Hope is known worldwide as a pioneering research center with a compassionate standard of patient care, which is why we chose this beautiful hospital to receive the donation” stated Mrs. Reinelt at the presentation luncheon.
The Austrian-American Council West (AACW) was founded in 1985 with the mission of perpetuating Austrian-American friendship, and this statement of purpose appears on the appreciation plaque that was unveiled by Ms. Reinelt and Executive Vice President Lilliana Popov-Alexander in the activity room that was dedicated to the AACW.
This spacious therapeutic room is prominently located directly behind the main information desk in the Main Medical Building at City of Hope. A much needed space for patient care, support groups, healing activities, art therapy, and educational programs to service, assist, and nurture pediatric patients and their families. AACW’s generous gift will further strengthen the bonds of the long-standing transatlantic friendship that exists between Austria and the United Sates.

“We believe in giving back to the community that accepted us as immigrants and enabled us to prosper, and we could think of no better way to show this friendship from the Austrian side than to contribute to America’s future through the health of its children” added Mrs. Reinelt.
Thirty benefactors and directors of the AACW along with Field Deputy Brian Mejia of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors toured the attractive campus of City of Hope, and participated in the unveiling and viewed the donors’ wall, in addition to visiting the rose garden where a plaque commemorates an earlier 2008 gift from the AACW given in honor of Austrian-American Day.
